PIMBY: Power In My Backyard

Home Energy Audit

If you are interested in decreasing your heating bills then the best course of action is to have a Home Energy Audit performed. PIMBY Energy offers a home energy audit that follows the standards produced by the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These standards focus on three tenets:

Safety

 Comfort

 Affordability

A home energy audit includes a review of the home from basement to attic. The audit identifies safety hazards, insulation levels, moisture problems, inefficient appliances, air leaks, and opportunities to improve home performance. The audit employs the use of a “blower door” which is used to determine where homes lose heated air to the outside and where air sealing measures such as caulking might be best applied.

A home energy audit costs $550 (+$0.50/mile) and it consists of an onsite inspection that lasts 3-5 hours. A review of utility bills is included (please have a 12-month record available of all energy bills). The final report provides a synopsis of the inspection findings as well as specific recommendations for:

  1. Resolving health/safety issues
  2. Increasing insulation
  3. Air sealing
  4. Conserving electricity

Ultimately, the recommendations will help to make your home safer and more comfortable. This is really a great service for anyone who wants to know more about how their home functions. I originally included it as an offering for people with heating issues, but it goes far beyond addressing these and is a valuable service to any homeowner.
