PIMBY: Power In My Backyard

Off-Grid Energy

Off-grid electric systems provide power beyond the reach of the utility line.  Typically, off-grid homes use high efficiency electric appliances and rely on propane or wood for space and water heating.

A battery bank is at the heart of any off-grid system.  Battery banks store power produced by a PV array, wind turbine, and /or fossil fuel generator.  This reservoir of energy powers household loads via an inverter which translates Direct Current in the battery bank to the Alternating Current used by common appliances.

An off-grid system can be a good fit for a weekend retreat or a full-time home.  The selection of efficient appliances and the practice of common sense conservation are key to off-grid living.  PIMBY can help you decide if an off-grid system will work for you.  Of critical importance is the system design which must balance household load expectations with the potential production of a PV, wind, and/or generator system.
